Everyone has their reasons, for me it's my father being a Duke graduate and
my being a UNC grad. Its a friendly rivalry but I think I hate Duke far
more than my father hates UNC. Part of it is the smugness and entitlement
you hear from fans and alumni, the other part is just a general loathing
kind of like why everyone that isnt a Yankees fan hates the Yankees. When I
was a kid the rich kids went to Duke the not so rich ended up at UNC or NC
State, so back then it was a social rivalry as much as a sports one. I do
have respect for Coach K and his program but I admit when it comes to
playing the Tarheels or the ACC tournament my respect takes a backburner.

Because Duke's the most prominent team. Same reason people hate the
Yankees or the Cowboys. Same reason most ACC fans still hate Carolina.
So why didn't more people hate, for instance, UCLA? I think it's just
because people didn't care as much about college basketball back then.

You can't teach greatness.

Sort of. It wasn't as popular across the whole nation,
but it may have been more popular in the Southeast and
Northwest. And high school football is still a BIG DEAL
in Texass.
