(possibly dumb) question about hand signals [message #875729] Wed, 08 March 2006 04:02

Frequently before important inbounds plays, I'll see the coach or the
player wave his hand back and forth in front of his face. Is this just
a general exhortation to get in their faces, or does it have some
specific meaning about who is going to do what? Does anybody know?

On that note, how about the signal where the coach has one finger
vertical and runs it around in a circle. Coach K does that all the
time, and I saw Roy do it in the last game as well.

Back in the dark days of the Gillen era, PeteyG used to do this one
signal on key possesions: he would sweep his forearm with his opposite
hand, like it had dust on it or something. I'm not sure what the signal
was for. My suitemates and I speculated, from observing the results of
the action after he made the motion, that it was the turn the ball over
or take a hasty shot that misses play.

This thread reminds me of Rolland Todd's small college
powerhouse of the late '60's at Nevada Southern University
(Now UNLV). The team had a starting forward named Donnie
Lyons who was a deaf mute. Todd made the whole team learn
to sign and they all started using sign almost exclusively
to communicate with each other and the coaches during games.
Drove the opposition nuts. :-)

My favorite sign is when a pretty girl winks back at me.

It varies. Some are play signals, some more or less freeform sign language
(like the coach glaring at a player and pointing to his own temple).

On the subject of hand signals, I always immediately look for the ref when
a charge/block whistle sounds, not always easy on television, to try to see
the call.

I like your answer better than the one I was going to give.
