This week could have gone better. I've run upper 80s for weeks at a time,
and few low-90s weeks too, so I didn't think this would be much more than a
way to boost my mileage PR. But some unexpected obligations
(badly-scheduled meetings, mostly) along with the usual heavy work schedule
made it harder to get the some of the runs in, and I was in sleep deficit
early on in the week. Tuesday's road repeats went well up through item 14,
then my calf started to tighten up, so I bagged after 16 400s. Friday
evening I met a much-faster running-club friend for an easy 8, and in
Jacobellisean fashion I kept up with his pace, which was too fast for me to
call easy and much too fast for the night before a hard 22-miler. That
method air caught me out the next morning, and I knew after the first few
miles there was no way I could run any of it at marathon pace. Both legs
hurt from top to bottom every step of the way, I kid you not. This morning
felt better but I kept it very slow. I feel kind of bad about missing the
MP part of Saturday's run, but there's not much to do but move on.

good week all

Awesome week, Karen. Do you ever done a 2-a-day the day before a long run?
How much time elapsed between your Friday night 8-miler and your Saturday
22-miler? I've never tried 2-a-days (I'm not sure if I ever will, unless I
start doing 70+ mile weeks), so I don't know if only 12 or so hours rest
between efforts would cause the concrete legs.

This was kind of a rest week for me after a steady increase in volume and
long run time over the last 6 weeks starting from a month off. Thursday had
my knees sore from running on snow, but for some reason my whole body was
achey, so I just bagged it. Last weekend I overdid it a little with the long
run combined with too much snow shoveling and skiing the next day.

Goals: SLEEP BETTER, run 5 days a week, adding volume slowly, lose more
weight, longer trail runs as the weather gets warmer; escarpment trail run
in July.

Training:
Week 12 of 20-week training plan. Took a light week this week in
preparation for next Saturday's 50k. I'm not doing a full

taper because the goal race isn't until April. Nonetheless, I feel like I
should cut back somewhat for a 31-mile run, even if

I'm not racing it.

Events:

2/25/06 Silver Comet Ultra Run 50k, Rockmart Georgia
http://www.tynesweb.com/guts/e-scur.html
I'm using this as a long training run for the 50-miler. This is a fast
course so I'll try hard to hold back. I'm going to try to stay slower
than 9:00 miles.

4/15/06 McNaughton Park Trail Runs, Pekin Illinois
http://tinyurl.com/avp9c
After the 50K my training will have to incorporate more hilly trails.
It's hard to believe but even though this is in Illinois (known for
being pancake flat), there are lots of hills on this course, as pictured
here http://tinyurl.com/gm3my. Also a few stream crossings, but they
look pretty tame http://tinyurl.com/hnayd. At any rate, it should be
fun!

Have a great week rec.runners.

I think there was about 12 hours between the Friday night run and the
Saturday morning run. When I run doubles during the week that's what it
usually works out to. I think the concrete legs were from 1) running too
fast Friday night for what I was trying to do, and 2) running on concrete
itself (we ran on a bunch of sidewalks Friday night).

The legs feel better today. We'll see what they're like after another easy
day.

Goal : PB marathon this year - probably in the Autumn

Training up the spout due to illness. Factor in the fact that I'll be
travel ling for work during all of March and I reckon I can forget about a
marathon PB in April.

Sunday was the last cross country race of the season, a pleasant course
round the lake which was dammed in 17th century to feed the Canal du Midi.
I decided to go run this despite still being ill - coughing and
runny-nosed - and not having run for 5 days.

Well after the first 1km or so, throat and lungs were burning, a throbbing
headache started up and that tensed me up so I got neck ache then side
stitch. Pity, I would 've liked to do the 10.5k version of the race, with
twice round the lake, but was not on.

Of course pace was crap compared to last Sunday's championship race,
despite an easier course. The guy from our club who beat me by a few secs
last week, stuffed more than a minute up my nose this time, on a much
shorter course.

I ran in Asics GT2110s instead of spikes cos there was a lot of hardcore
tracks and no mud anywhere. Wished I'd had the DS Trainers with me cos I
love the GTs but they ain't 6km racing shoes.

Time km mi avHR%
Mon 0:49 9 6 69 Easy, 3x round park near work.

Tue 0:00 Unplanned rest, in bed all day with fever. Must have

Disneyland Paris jaunt :->

Wed 0:00 Unplanned rest. Filthy head cold still, moving down
Thu 0:00 onto throat by Wednesday evening. Raining too
Fri 0:00 so no way I'm risking outdoor exercise. Coughing

Best week yet!!!

Mon: weights & core work
Tue: 2.5 mi run
Wed: weights & core work
Thur: 2.0 mi hill run
Fri: no workout
Sat: 2.0 mi run, weights & core work
Sun: 5 mi run (my longest!)

Total mileage this week: 11.5 mi, total mileage for 2006: 53.25 mi

All 4 runs felt great, the hill one being the toughest. But, I live in
downtown San Francisco and I had better get used to running hills;
there's only a couple runs I can take with going uphill at all.

Sunday's run was really good. Tough, but good. I went down Post to
Market to the Embarcadero to Aquatic Park, out to the long pier and
back around to Fisherman's Wharf, where I did some shopping at Trader
Joe's. I love multi-tasking!!! : D

btw, TJ's corn salsa is to DIE FOR!!! I had salmon tacos for dinner and
could have eaten the whole jar...

Neither (well, the brain is always a problem :-). I noticed some typos in
the figures just after I posted, so I canceled the previous post and
reposted a corrected version.

It seems you were quick off the draw (or the cancels aren't being handled
correctly / promptly by all the news relays in the world) and managed to

55.45 NY and Philadelphia east coast miles, as

Mo: 3.55 slow pace but moderate effort through the ice and snow of the
weekend blizzard. Woo-hoo, I get to wear the IceBugs this winter.

Tu: 3.65 easy, still a bit snowy and slushy but back to regular shoes

We: 10.0 incl 8 x 35" strides and 20' around MP

Th: 5.0 easy

Fr: AM - 10.0 incl 10 x 20" strides and 3.35 mi tempo (~HMP), temp 55F
PM - 3.55 easy recovery, windchill 28F

Sa: 4.7 easy self-guided tour of Philly's center city

Su: AM - 12.0 easy, in Philly's Fairmount Park up and down the
Schuylkill River. Good spot for a run, and lots of folks out doing so
despite the 21 degree (my estimate) windchill. Kelvin. Wanted to put
in 15 but running late for brunch reservation.
PM - 3.0 recovery on hotel dreadmill plus mile on rowing machine.

Enjoying a weekend getaway. Seem to be more better running options
here than NYC (which is second only to Saint Petersburg, Russia in my
experience to date for "worst running city in the world"... though of
course it's good for _racing_ what with all the clubs, talent, and
races). And - you betcha - plenty of good food and Ye Olde Easte
Coaste culture, as opposed to those west coast well-tanned barbarians.

.....and this is your attempt of humor in how i stated i outperformed
donovan in the context of AG scoring? you're saying you will beat me
on time, but not in the AG rankings, and i will assert
victory?...that's essentially the crux of humor?

you elected to publicly personally challenge me to a race on April 2, a
10K. i accepted your challenge and asked what we're putting on the
line....and suggested $1K....you were then the predictable "Brooklyn

silent, dodged response.

Scotland 10K, April 2 Pendejo...that's the race you challenged me.
Runner that comes in second between us buys the victor a pair of
running shoes of his choice not to exceed $100. Fair enough?

I'm just responding to you Pendejo....and if you want to know when I am
next racing again so much....answer up and give me a reason to line up

would. But my 80-85% & BMI of 26 and age of 5 years older than you is

That did occur to me after I'd posted but I couldn't be ars*d to proof read
them for typos. ;-)

FWIW, I've never known cancels to work. I think messages just propagate so
d*mn fast these days.

Goals: Local Grand Prix series of races, 2 down, 8 to go. Next
is in April. But I'd like to do the AZ Distance Classic Half-M
next month. Keep doing speedwork once a week, and make it either
faster or more reps, while staying sound!

Mon: Rest Day (day after the last race)
Tues: Treadmill Speedwork. 1 mile warmup, 6 x 800 [at] 7:19 pace,
with 400 "rests" at 8:57 pace. Last one was tough. total 5.5 miles.
Wed: 6.3 mi [at] 8:55 pace. Nice day, felt good, no lingering stiffness.
Thu: 5.5 mi on treadmill. Very very windy outside, so watched TV
and took easy run (9:41 pace).
Fri: Rest Day and Sci Fi Friday...
Sat: 13.5 mi [at] 9:23 overall pace in Sabino Canyon. Gorgeous morning.
Canyon barely has any water in it right now. It's been awhile since
I've done some serious hill work, but we did fine.
Sun: 5.52 mi [at] 9:11 pace. Both of us have some stiff spots, mostly in
the glutes (him) or hams (me) from yesterday's hills. Big annoyance-
several groups of rude ATVs flying by us kicking up dust clouds.
First SNAKE out today, it was mightily ticked off from the ATVs.
This is WAY TOO EARLY for snakes to be out, it's only FEB!! Thank
you, global warming...

Total: 36.32 miles

Geesh, still quite a good race despite the illness! 4th OA and 3 AG!
Big congrats! I wouldn't worry about your rival's effort this time, he
had an unfair advantage. You'll get him next time out.

I would have perhaps agreed if you had provided your own answer to the
"what time on a flat 10k" question. In that way I would have been able to
judge your take on "tough".

If you'd said 39'xx becomes 36', then I'd agree it's tough. If you say
39'xx becomes 38'xx I say it ain't tough but it ain't a quick course. In
fact that's pretty much what I did say.

Remember also that you won't be running a sub-36k any time soon and even
at your best, 37' was more likely. At the time of your 39'xx, you were
recovering (at 80-85% capacity) so I reckon my 38'30 is a sound deduction.

Is that why you don't seem happy with what I wrote?

>Having established that foundation....what in your opinion
>then Steve is "tough"?

For example, the "Challenge de la Paix et du Souvenir" in Pompertuzat, a
village near where I live. It has more than 170m + and - elevation change
(more than 500ft up and the same down). The race organisers consider this
as "average difficulty" in their adverts.

There are numerous 10k, 21k and various non-standard distance races in
this area which have similar or greater elevation changes. I don't have to
look any further than my own back door. Do you want me too?

Don't even get me started on the Pyrenees road races the. Try the
Ascension of the Pla d'Adet that Lance Armstrong did on his bike during
the Tour de France. This is also done as an 11k summer road race, with a
+8.3% average slope.

All these seem to me to fit the "tough" trademark for a road race, though
I'd probably call the latter a mountain race cos the net elevation change
is not zero.

>I assert you're ignorant to Central Parks course

Central Park is the only place I ever ran in North America (plus a bit of
Broadway and the Avenues). OK, I am certainly nowhere near as familiar
with it as you, but I only need once round a race course to get the
feeling.

I ran quite a bit round the park, including a big chunk of your 10k
course. Maybe I missed all the 10% slopes.

>I assert you have no perspective from
>which to suggest the course is not "tough".

So you simply mean "tougher than flat" from your perspective is that it?

> I don't believe you know
>what you're talking about at all....quite frankly.... But perhpas I am
>wrong.

It does look that way but I'd be happy to see your point if others agree
that there's nothing way tougher in the North America.

And in that case, you'd have to concede that you're lacking perspective
too.

there - he talked about racing you in NY.

You keep the money between you and Tony. I predict you will not even
make it to the starting line unless you forego all training for this
race and that would make ultra stupid and guarantee you shit the bed big
time. You are struggling so hard to prove to this group and maybe some
of your local buds that you are this magnificent plump speed demon, that
you will not devote the time necessary to get to this race prepared.

If you think you can prepare for this race in Central park or any park
in the city, you are sadly mistaken. This means you will need to drive
or take a train as others do and get to say Bear Mountain every few
weeks to do some serious training. This training will take you from your
Big D contests in Central park and I know your pseudo bravado could not
tolerate missing a Big D contest to train.

Hint - you better think about working up to a long run of about 4 hours
with oodles of elevation and shitty footing with a camel back or waist
holster with your favorite fluid plus some salt and food. Sorry dude,
no accolades when it's just you and the timber rattlers. I don't think
you have the balls to put in the time and effort for a single race. At
this time I think you're all idle chatter but I would be the first to
congratulate you if you show and finish sans a body bag. Talk is
cheap!!!!!

Agreed. Pass the word to Pendejo (aka the Brooklyn Dodger). Tell me
though Doug....several times Doug you've mocked WAVA grading. Why is
that?

imo it's an effective yardstick to measure performance across
generations or runners. you Doug just the other days stressed "mano y
mano". that's all well & good....but is it not silly to assert a
notion of "man v. man" when one man is 25 and the other is 75?

what's so (in your terms & language) "wussy" about referencing AG%
performance....as the foundation to frame & measure race results? you
and others have repeatedly mocked this concept. now because i had a
race wherein i out performed donovan using this measure.....most around
here "gave me the business" over using that. just the other day
Pendejo joked about it. now i assume this collective mocking was done
so due to the fact that it was outspoken me that outperformed donovan
on this paremeter of measure.....and that in truth...you all feel it
has its valid and appropriate place....in functioning as a measure of
performance across all runners in a singular event. Otherwise.....you
are asserting that all runner's performance should be measured blind of
age.

in my local circuit....i tip my cap to the guys 10 and 20 years older
than me that i might beat on time....however i know full well they
"outperformed me". i don't fool myself. What's the foundation,
basis, and rationale about mocking WAVA grading?

Yes, that's it. It's not terrible, but certainly not flat and fast either. As

Well, on the ESPN2 broadcast, they were very clearly racing up hills on the
cinder trails with railroad ties across, even the 4k's showed that, so it
wasn't just pure flats.
