TMac says he couldn't score that much in a video game [message #808862] Tue, 24 January 2006 16:32

With the NBA buzzing about Kobe Bryant's 81 points on Sunday, Rockets
forward Tracy McGrady was at first speechless and then could not say enough
about what Bryant did.

"I'm still in awe of what that kid did," said McGrady, whose 62 points
against the Wizards in 2004 had been tied with Bryant's 62 against the
Mavericks for the most in a game by a current NBA player. "It was just a
hell of a performance for him to shoot the ball only 46 times to score 81
points. But not just to be able to shoot it 46 times, but to shoot it 46
times and hit well over 50 percent. There are nights I'm in the 30s of shots
taken and I've been fatigued. To take 46 and 20 free throws and end up with
81 points, I didn't believe it.

"We were on the bus and Luther ( Head) yelled out, 'Kobe's got 70-something
and there's four minutes left.' I said, 'Luther, stop lying.' I hurried up
and got my key and went to my room and called one of my boys to put on the
game and Kobe was at the free throw line with 79 points. I said, 'Are you
serious?' I don't think I could score that many in a video game."

McGrady said he was amazed at Bryant's stamina and the Raptors' lack of
adjustments.

"I talked to Mike ( James) after the game," McGrady said. "He said they
didn't double team him - not one time. You would think after he hit 40, send
two or three guys at him. When he hit 50? When he got 70? What are you
doing: playing him one-on-one?"

Sam Mitchell took the "If we let Kobe do his thing and stop everyone
else then we'll still win the game" theory a little too far. I mean,
Sacramento did it and won, but then again Kobe shot "only" 49% in that
game.

You should really get that looked at.

hes a ball hog, when kobe, iverson and mcgrady socre big, they take
tons of shots to get that far. its not like they shoot 60% and score
the 35 plus per game
they are superstars but will never win an nba title going k-solo.
now labron, on the other hand, can score and make the people around him
better. thats whats impressive.
its also impressive to see teams like detroit have multiple players in
double scoring figures and mega assists per game.
actual team play, not BALL hog scoring and shooting.

Lets trade:

Kwame for Sheed
Mihm for Wallace
Odom for Prince
Smush for Billups

I guarantee that Kobe never scores over 50 with that lineup. Heck, he
probably wouldn't score 30 but the next 6 titles all come to LA.

Complaining that Kobe shoots a lot because he is on an undertalented
team is simply stupid.
When your a superstar saddled with journeyman players, your going to
shoot a lot.

Each of these statements is dubious at best. Indeed, I would virtually
guarantee you that that lineup would self-destruct so badly that it might
not make the playoffs.

> Complaining that Kobe shoots a lot because he is on an undertalented

It depends on what you mean by "a lot". It also depends on what kind of
shots he's taking and how many he's making. In game like the Toronto game
it is hard to find fault - but in a game where he is forcing up long fall-
away jumpers in the face of regular double and triple teams while other
players are wide open, then I think it is more than fair to complain.

Kobe did shoot 60+% when he scored 81. Besides, not even most centres
average 60% on their FGs.

Prove it. Or are you arguing that the Detroit starting lineup is less
talented than the Lakers?

That is decision making but we will mark you in the "Kobe is a ball
hog" camp with the original poster.

I'm saying that Detroit couldn't win the title last year and that it's
dubious that adding Kobe in place of Rip Hamilton would suddenly make them
6peaters. Indeed, Hamilton is averaging under 17 FGA/gm. Kobe is averaging
almost 11 more shots per game. I'm saying that if you try to take those 11
shots per game away from the rest of the lineup, that's trouble a brewin'.

If you feel the need to "mark" people, be my guest. We have our fair share

impossible to pay any credence to what you are trying to say.

You want to rethink how that sounds? Kobe is so disruptive putting him in the starting lineup of the
pistons instead of Rip would make them self distruct....

Nice moment in the recent Houston-Pistons game from T-Mac. In the
midst of a (surprisingly) close game, one in which McGrady was going to
score over 40, he semi-collided with some fans in the front row after
hustling for a ball. He saw a little girl in the row who might have
been frightened, and he took a moment to say something to her, with a
big smile on his face. Speaking as a Pistons fan, although that might
seem like a little thing, I thought it showed some real class.

Oh, and also speaking as a Pistons fan, we decline the trade offers
suggested above ;-) --Joe

Thanks, but I don't want to upset what's turned out to be a very
impressive apple cart right now. But here's an idea for you: wait
until Detroit loses a few more games, then after some loss go to the
Pistons official site and check out the message boards. After a couple
of the earlier losses (which set Detroit back to dismal records such as
26-5), there were actually folks suggesting trades involving Detroit's
starters. Some folks don't know how good they've got it ...--Joe

Ah boy. A "simulator". Gee that's relevant. And I'll point out that the bar
is not "go to the finals." You said, and I quote "the next 6 titles all
come to LA." Are you backing away from that statement?

Strawman. Why can't you defend your actual statement? Because it was stupid
shit? With Rip they lost the finals. I am saying that Kobe is not good
enough to single-handedly turn them into 6peaters. But apparently you
cannot address that statement so you need ot make up different ones to
attack.
