This was literally the stuff of dreams.
The Lakers' Kobe Bryant took 46 shots to score 81 points against Toronto
Sunday, and a league of scorers went to bed with sinful visions of shooting
every time down the floor.
"I could, sure," Celtic Ricky Davis said last night of whether he could take
46 shots in a game. "I've been dreaming about it."
A few more comments like this from the Celtics' gung-ho swingman, and Doc
Rivers' dreams will be filled with red flags. But even the Celtics coach had
to marvel last night at Bryant's feat, a scoring total second only to Wilt
Chamberlain's 100-point NBA record.
"What was lost in all of that was that he got it going when they were down
by 18 points," Rivers said.
"The other amazing part was that he didn't get tired at the end."
None of the Celtics were alive when Chamberlain went wild in 1962, and they
couldn't imagine the 7-footer's collection of dunks and layups as being more
taxing than Bryant's route to 81.
"When you're taking jump shots, you're going to get more tired," said Paul
Pierce, who can't envision an NBA player breaking the 100-point barrier now.
"Wilt got all layups. With the athletes that are in the game today, no, it
wouldn't happen. You would have to put more minutes on the clock.
"Well, maybe Kobe could do it," he said. "If he shot every time down the
floor."
