Phil: Red's right, I'm not great

Phil Jackson and Red Auerbach have both won an NBA-record nine
championships, but the former Celtics coach doesn't think they're in the
same league. At the start of the season, Auerbach told reporters the reason
Jackson tied him for the title record is because the former Knick only
agrees to coach superstar-laden teams.

Oddly enough, Jackson says his rival may right.

"I perhaps am not a great coach, basketball-wise," Jackson tells Marv Albert
on "The Marv Albert Show," scheduled to air next Friday on the YES Network.
"I might be good with the psychological end of it, and good at the technical
end of it. Maybe not great."

Many NBA fans knew this years ago.

Actually, it's: Pavlov's dog - Bell, Scott Smith - Lakers

I've disliked the Lakers since Magic's days. It's always been
too much about the "cult of personality" and less about the
game, IMO.

Then you must hate the Bulls and Celtics too, that is, if it's just about
the "cult of personality" as you say.

Yes, but in L.A. it's not just about the team...it's about the
celebrity fans...the rappers at the games....the rioting fans after
playoff series...the criminal players...etc.

And because it's L.A., they all get plenty of media time...whether
they deserve it or not.

I'll take the Bulls or Celtics over the Lakers, any day.

You'll take the Bulls or Celtics over the Lakers everyday because the
Lakers has always been a team with a "cult of personality" philosophy
starting from the time of Magic?

Well the Celtics of yesteryear are also based on the cult of the
personalities of Auerbach and Russell, and that of Bird in the 80s.
They also struggled under the cult of personality of Rick Pitino. On
the other hand, the Bulls won on the cult of personality of Michael
Jordan.

Whether it's the Lakers, Celtics, or Bulls, all of these teams had
cults of personality. You're just to blind in your Laker hate to see
that your beloved Celtics and Bulls also had them.

You fell out the the tree going after Kobe last week. I would go to far out
on this limb either if I were you. Just think how you will feel if Phil
takes this rag tag group into the Western Conference Finals.

If this is true you should be liking them better now that they're down to
one personality.

Not entirely. The Russell games were not that popular, according to the
older generation, and the only "character" anyone really liked on those
teams was Cousy.

The 70s squad, however, had the least ego driven media all stars of
Hondo, Big Red, Silas, and JoJo but those games were well attended and
the concept of Celtic Pride grew from the 70s generation.

Now, if you're talking the 80s, then you're absolutely correct. It was
always Bird, Bird, and more of Bird. The media never stopped giving
credit to the man when if fact, Chief and others were a huge part of
his overall success.

> They also struggled under the cult of personality of Rick Pitino.

Well... there's not much that needs to be said about this.

sure - most of boston was racist & supported their white wonder...but

what about the black neighborhoods? wasnt Russell a huge favorite
there? even into the 70's i saw posters on barbershop walls of
Russ outreaching, say Thurmond, or Wilt for the rebound. impressive
stuff. and that starting five with the goatee thang going? the
jazz quintet of basketball...these guys certainly had something
going in those neighborhoods?

Russell had a big cult of personality himself. When Cousy retired,
Russell became the team's undisputed leader. When Auerbach retired, he
was made playing coach. His teammates respected him, and his opponents
feared him. He was a huge cult of personality by himself too.
