A turn of the year rules question. [message #782897] Sun, 01 January 2006 18:17
John Turner
On December 31st , 2005, Bill and Ben set out in the final of the Christmas
season match play competition. When they were playing the 12th hole, a par
five, Bill couldn't find his ball after playing his second shot. After a
brief search Bill headed back up the fairway to where he had played his last
stroke and he dropped a ball.

Before playing the dropped ball, Ben called out to him that he had found the
original ball and, as the five minutes allowed for search had not elapsed,
Bill should head back up the fairway to see if the ball is indeed his
original ball. Before he could walk more than two paces the siren went to
suspend play immediately. There was an un-seasonal tropical thunderstorm
approaching County Clare.

Play was suspended for quite some time and so Bill and Ben agreed to resume
play the following day, January 1st. In the interim, Bill identified the
ball found by Ben as his original ball. Does Bill resume play with the
original ball, or does he have to abandon it and play the dropped ball?

No serious answers will be considered.

Cheers!, and a very happy New Year to all.

John Turner.

Both Bill and Ben were too hungover from New Year's celebrations, and
remained in their flower pots all day.

They decided to ask for a Decision by the Club Captain, Mr Weed, and
abide by his Ruling. Although postponed, the Match will continue on
January 2, before Mr Gardner, the Club President, comes back from his
Christmas holidays.

And Happy New Year to you, John.

I'll start with the Seasons greetings to all who read the group.

As far as B&B are concerned they now have had time to consider Mr
Weed's ruling and they just do not understand it, for as Captain of the
club Mr Weed does not consider it his responsibility to read the new
Decisions and passed the responsibility on to John Snail, handicap and
match Secretary (much like the original author of this thread).

John was, as to be expected, very slow in giving a decision and
couldn't make up his mind whether the original or the dropped ball
should be played (much like the Decision makers at the R&A) so when B&B
went back to the position where their balls were when play was
suspended they couldn't remember where the balls were when they marked
them and decided to retire to the bar for a New Year drink!

To hell with golf and rules at this time of year!

Are the players sure that Spotty Dog didn't move the ball at all ?

Happy New Year to one and all.

I have it on good authority that Mr Snail had not considered it necessary to
state in the conditions, that the Rules that were in effect at the start of
the competition remained in effect for the duration of the competition. Thus
a doubt was planted in the mind of the Captain, Mr Weed, and helped to sow
the seeds of discontent.
