Hawkstone Park, Belton Woods and Gloucester [message #782860] Tue, 27 December 2005 10:31
wacko
Hello

Yet again it has been left to me to organise our yearly 3 day golf weekend.
The last few years I have booked through golf breaks.com and had some great
courses and accommodation. We have played Meon Valley, Breadsall Priory,
forest Pines, seacroft.

This year I am looking at 3 possible venues and would value any opinions you
may like to give.
the courses are Belton Woods, Gloucester and Hawkstone park.

the main requirements are a great course, good accommodation and a town
nearby to go out in...

many thanks for any opinions you may like to give on the courses I have
mentioned..

I've played all three and in order of preference I'd recommend

Hawkstone Park, Hawkstone Park, Hawkstone Park

Two courses, the older one being far the better, but the new one has it's
moments.

Belton Woods felt newish when I played it maybe 10 years ago, it may
<underline> have improved.
Gloucester, by which I assume you mean Gloucester Hotel & Country Club is
OKish, but in a contest between the three I'd play Hawkstone three times
before either of the others.

South fixture in 2005 many of whom intend to play it again in 2006 )

I've played Belton Woods and I wouldn't again. Nothing special,

The other replies to date recommend Hawkstone Park, and as I haven't played
the others cannot argue with that!

HP is an excellent venue, but it lacks one thing that you desire, namely a
town nearby that you can go out in afterwards and have a drink or three. The
restaurant at HP is very good and our dinner this year didn't finish until
1145 on a Sunday evening and the bar stayed open afterwards, even though I
was a wuss and went to bed.

I'll go along with other comments and recommend Hawkstone Park. The
Hawkstone course (the older one) has some quirky holes but off-hand I cannot
remember any which were too open and boring. (Indeed there are one or two
right buggers that will have you cursing all the way to the next tee if you
stray off-line). A 3-day stay would give you ample time to learn how to
play the course.

But... you may find the availability of that course restricted. We were
lucky in May and got two rounds in two days. I know that for 2006 we are
playing one round on each (their normal 2-round deal).

I focussed on the golf, but to be honest if going out is a priority then
you're a bit stuck with Gloucester being the only one which is remotely near
a town of any size. You could organise a taxi into Shrewsbury I'd have
thought from HP, or maybe a taxi to Grantham from Belton, and you'd need a
taxi into Gloucester too, albeit a cheper shorter ride.

If the night out is important then try Lindrick or Holinwell for your golf
and go out in Nottingham instead. or go to Leeds and play Alwoodley,
Moortown and Sand Moor.

it gets tricky this chooisng thing doesn't it!

Cheers for the advice.......

I hate these organising events, last year I was very fortunate because
everyone enjoyed Meon Valley........

HP is fully booked which is a shame but I have been put onto a couple of
other courses that fulfil the criteria. Wychwood park and Ufford
Park........

many thanks for all your advice....

It a pity that you cant make HP..its a lot better (IMHO) than Meon
Valley.
