Turkish Cup Final 2005: Galatasaray-Fenerbahce [R] [message #297023] Thu, 12 May 2005 00:40

ISTANBUL (AFP) - Galatasaray won the 2005 Turkey Cup with a 5-1 demolition
of arch city rivals Fenerbahce at the Olympic stadium which will play host
to the Champions' League final between Liverpool and AC Milan.

Galatasaray opened the scoring in the 16th minute through talented French
winger Franck Ribery, who connected with a Necati Ates pass to send a nice
right-footer past Rustu Recber in the Fenebahce goal.

Ribery returned the compliment barely 10 minutes later, serving Ates from
the goal line for the pony-tailed striker to side-foot it past Recber.

The man who made the difference on the night was Galatasaray's Colombian
'keeper Faryd Mondragon, with more than half a dozen heroic saves against a
star-studded fenerbahce attack that had twice as many shots on goal and
dominated play for most of the match.

Galatasaray made it 3-0 in the 38th minute, when captain Hakan Sukur slid
into a pass by Ates deflected by Recber into the path returning defender
Deniz Baris for an unlucky own goal.

Fenerbahce then literally blockaded the Galatasaray goal and Mondragon,
after a series of rapid-fire saves in the 41st minute, finally surrendered
to a volley by Luciano.

Fenerbahce, who have a four-point league lead on Galatasaray with three
games remaining - the two meet again in a potential title decider in 10
days' time - settled into the Galatasaray half after the break.

But they left themselves vulnereable in defence to speedy counter-attacks
and Sukur made it 4-1 in the 72nd minute on a deep cross from Cihan
Haspolatli.

Sukur then made it 5-1 two minutes from time on a similar pass from the
other side from veteran midfielder Ergun Penbe.

Only 18,000 fans, fearing mounting violence in Turkish stands, showed up at
the 80,000-seat stadium that will host the Champions' League final on May 25
and despite the relatively small crowd observers said the venue passed the
test with flying colours.

Access roads to the stadium were completed only recently and observers
deemed the security measures -- 8,000 policemen were on duty -- and
organizational details, overseen by an unprecented 80 UEFA observers,
according to media reports, were sound.

It was a big shame that only 18.000 people watched the game even though it
is one of the biggest derbys all over the world and the game was a final
game;moreover the game was at the stadium, at which the UCL Final is going
to played.
It was because of the extremly-high ticket prices and the virtual doubts
which had been created by the media and the Turkish Football Federation. The
capacity of the stadium is 80.000, but the TFF had announced that only
50.000 tickets were going to be pressed and sold due to the fears of a
possible fight between fans of both sides.

I can't believe Sukur is still playing.

He's actually a very good pure finisher, so I'm not surprised at all.
