Perth v Melbourne [R] [message #1088590] Sun, 23 July 2006 04:53

Perth Glory 1
(Young 59')

Melbourne Victory 1
(Allsopp 51')

This match really should have resulted in a Melbourne victory. They
outplayed the Glory, especially in the first half. Perth's squad currently
consists mostly of state league players since money troubles caused 12
players to leave at the end of last season. We have signed (former?)
Socceroo Stan Lazaridis who has come back home in the twilight of his
career. He didn't take the field though.

Perth keeper Jason Petkovic had to be substituted because of an ankle injury
at 70' right after a great save on the goal line.

There were a number of yellow cards against both teams, some of them looked
pretty soft to me.

The venue, Dorrien Gardens is the home of the Perth Soccer Club, a state
league side. Perth Oval is not yet available due to a contractual dispute
between the owners (the Town of Vincent) and Perth Glory. I think that's the
case anyway. At Dorrien Gardens the setting is rustic, with Perth SC
volunteers providing bar and food service themselves. We stood on the
halfway line because the crowd was small and there are no seats outside the
grandstand. Seats there were all in the shade so therefore too cold.

Good stuff. Was this a pre-season cup game? If so, you probably should
mention it.

Have you seen http://rsssf.com (rss statistics foundation)? If you
want to provide results or reports for games in aus you'd probably be
welcome to. Go to the website and email one of the contacts if you're
interested.

I've been to a few Glory games in Perth. Good atmosphere.

Oh yes, sorry. It was. Next week Perth plays Adelaide at home but I probably
won't be able to go as it's on a Sunday. I do volunteer work at the Princess
Margaret Hospital for Children.

Melbourne Victory look like they have a good squad this year,
particularly if donkeys like Allsopp can score with any regularity.

We have three Brazillians - Fred (no not that Fred), Claudinho and
Allessandro. Fred and Claudinho will be up front with Archie Thompson
- Allessandro is a centre back apparently.

This year will determine if Ernie Merrick can coach or not.

It looks like Telstra Dome will be used for the Sydney FC (aka Bling
FC) as good old Olympic Park will not cope with the expected crowd.

Forza Victory, forza A-League!
