My neighbor just got back from his trip to the finals...
He told me that the Italian fans were willing to pay $8000 per seat
(ouch!)-and made snotty comments to my neighbor and his group along the
lines of:
"You Americans don't even deserve to go"
Well, one of the Italians asked my neighbor and his group "Do you even know
who is playing?"
To which a guy, with a lot of Boston attitude, responded
"The Yankees and the Red Sox" :)
All heck broke loose, with ultimately the cops having to distance the two
groups...comments like "this is why everyone hates Americans"...
I don't know, but my dad always had a saying that went
"You ask a stupid question, you get a stupid action"
In otherwords, those guys got the response they deserved!

I guess that when people start to condescend, it's not hard to lose one's
cool...I do remember one conversation I had at 3 AM at our hotel in
Gelsenkirchen with a couple of condescending, drunk Germans who sounded
amazed that the USA would even expect to get results (mind you, the way we
played that day we should have gotten minus points :( )...I guess that we
will continue to be greeted by that attitude until we start beating big
teams regularly...
You are right-I do tend to avoid confrontation.
BTW-he also said the security was intense, and it took him about 1 1/2 hours
to clear security and get to his seats...

saying "Those buildings are too old, they should knock 'em down and build

Expecting this crap is one of several reasons I stayed in Duesseldorf
for that match. The Czechs were quite OK though... when they got drunk
they just sang songs :-)

Screw 'em. I bid for my tickets in the first lottery and got a
couple, after which people were always saying "aren't you lucky?" as
thought this was in some wsay magic whereupon I would ask them if they

Did YOU personally overhear anything like that? I see this kind of
urban legends floating around the web all the time. My favorite one is
how Americans visiting London wonder why the Windsor castle was build
so close to the Heathrow airport. Nothing more than an old joke
(perhaps originally told by Americans themselves), it has become a
rather stupid urban legend. It is amazing how many idiots actually
believe it. No wonder some American tourists intentionally spread this
kind of rumors about themselves to make fun of stupid gullible euros.

Although the stories cited are likely hyperbolic, there is no doubt one
can find the 'ugly American' tourist if looking for it. Once in the
Frankfurt airport I saw a family cutting in on a very long passport line
to get to a flight - every other person in line was also in a rush, but
this did not deter them. The daughter of the family spoke and I
recognized the Chicago accent, then immediately switched to speaking
German to hopefully avoid any connection with my much ruder American
countrymen.
Plus - and perhaps these are not as publicized internationally - many of
our celebrities say things that are just entirely stupid. Shaquille
O'Neal's famous quote when asked if he visited the Parthenon - basically
"I don't know the names of all the clubs we visited." The insufferably
stupid Tara Reid's travel show was replete with her mixing up history
and culture. If I recall correctly, she placed a potato famine in
Greece. These things do not help our perception worldwide.

By the way, my neighbor is full Sicilian/American and I am half Sicilian...

Wait a sec. Americans may be best in the world at "Why don't they build
a McDonalds at the top of the Eiffel Tower" comments. They even do it
here. I once ran into a fellow American on the outer beaches of the
beautiful Olympic Peninsula who wondered why "they didn't build a
boardwalk with amusement park rides out here(?)"
But line-cutting? I believe your story, and am not claiming that Yanks
never do it. Based on my experiences, though, Seppos rank pretty low in
the world in the art of queue-crashing. It is hardly something
Americans have a monopoly on.

I don't know. In my opinion, Europeans (especially Eastern Europeans!)
are a lot more experienced in the line cutting business. Even New
Yorkers are no match to them ;) I personally had some bad experiences
in NYC (once was nearly ran over by a car at a crosswalk at JFK) but
never in Chicago. I live in Indy so I go to Chicago quite often.
I noticed another thing -- a lot of people seem to be a lot more
critical of their own countrymen. My German friends say the same things
about their fellow German tourists "embarrassing them all over the
world" (sic!).

Well, it is in every celebrity's job description, isn't it. Do you
believe that international celebrities somehow have higher IQ's than
the U.S. ones? Maybe it is a matter of exposure...

one language and therefore may be perceived by Europeans as not

This is probably true. I likely hear the ugly American thing more since
I am American, thus it sticks with me.

Also true. International celebs have limited exposure here unless they
"cross over" and thus we know more about the homegrown morons.

Also true. It is only in recent years - probably the past two decades -
that many schools have begun offering richer language programs and some
requiring such. I live in Texas and have always thought it should be
mandatory to take Spanish at an early age. My daughter is in
kindergarten, so imagine my delight that her school is now requiring
just that - she can at least count and pick up a few phrases.

I would not be able to produce it, but I have indeed heard the audio
clip. Probably the better example of sheer stupidity in sports quotes
is Jason Kidd, but I used Shaq since more people are aware of him.

Words defy me. It's so soaked in history, you faint (and I very nearly
did in that taxi ride from the airport).
(However, one of the worst "tourist" related things happened to me in
Rome. We were near a bunch of Brazilians in a popular spot
overlooking Rome, with it's gorgeous seven hills, the scene of which
was one of undulating timelessness. It was magical. Suddenly I hear
some old perua say in loud tones in Portuguese, "Oh! All this old
stuff! I wish Oscar Niemeyer would come and bulldoze this into
oblivion". I cannot convey to you my primordial disgust, but maybe md
can).
To which Brazilian RSS'er Alex Mizuki, replied:
"*WOW* I guess the term "Ugly American" also applies to the Southern
type as well."
It's a New World thing, I guess.

It is well documented that (North) Amercian's have a lower percentage
of passport holders (current estimates less than 20%) and thus
travellers than those from other nations. One of the reasons American
may not travel outside the U.S. is because of the attitude/reaction
they get from other travellers. I met an American (Eddie) while
travelling in Chile, and he told he that he gets a lot of negative
comments from other travellers, about U.S. foreign and environmental
policy, and the assumption that as an American he must be a supporter
of the George Bush/Republican policy.
Eddie explained that it was mainly Canadians and Europeans making
criticisms of the U.S. but in fact the biggest critics of Bush/U.S.
policy were Americans such as himself, and that over 50 percent of
Americans are not supporters of Bush.
Examples of negative comments Eddie gave were
- people mentioning the Kyoto protocol, and that the U.S. has not
signed up (making no mention of Australia not signing up)
- people criticising the US over the the Iraq war (again not mentioning
the UK Australian and other support for this)
- people saying "you're the token American" when he was on a
tour.
I must admit, I have been surprised at the amount of U.S. critical
comments I have heard on my world tour. Teachers at a language school I
attended made anti-U.S. jokes (unprofessional in my opinion).
I am not surprised many Americans don't travel outside the U.S., or
pretend to be Canadian when they travel abroad if this is the reaction
they get!
My advice to to travellers is;
1. Don't be hard on American travellers.
2. Don't assume all U.S. citizens are Bush supporters and support
American foreign/environmental policy.
3. Basically, give people a chance

A common argument is that one should, if so inclined, take to task the
administration and not the population. This ignores the fact that in a
great democracy like the US, it is the great mass of all citizens that
is ultimately responsible for government policy.
Having said that, we should not presume that every citizen agrees with
every government policy. And I have to say that, generally speaking, I
find American tourists to be very polite, generous and nice people.

I think it's mainly because there's so much to do in the U.S. Hell, I've
been visiting National Parks in the West for as long as I can remember (I'm
31) and I still have a number I haven't gotten to just in the ones west of
the Rockies, the biggest being Yosemite.

Strictly speaking, that should be 49% of the people who voted plus some
other to-be-determined number of people, if it's a figure derived from
election results.

Gotta get there! I once took a roadtrip thru the west in which we hit
at least 10 NPs. I'm not into the favorites game, but Yosemite is truly
a special park. Try to avoid it on summer weekends, though!

To be fair, one should also mention that travelling from USA to
anywhere of interest (Canada and Mexico have much to offer, just not
anything substantial to Americans) is much more expensive, lengthy and
difficult, than is for Europeans. So Americans naturally don't get
much of an opportunity of being exposed to different cultures.

You mean the beaches of Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo San Lucas don't
draw Americans???
Of course, you can make the case that Cancun and Cabo are not part of
Mexico, as the only people speaking Spanish there work there :)-there's some
truth to that. Not as much so in Puerto Vallarta.

Were the Italian fans northern or southern Italians? If they were
Northern Italians they generally do not like Italian Americans. Most
northerners assume Italian-Americans are from the south and they hate
Sicilians or anyone from Rome or further south. In the notherners
view, no Italian in the north would have emigrated to the USA as
northern Italy is a paradise. Been there seen that.
More than a few articles mentioned how the WC Azurri brought Italians
closer together....at least for a few days It is common for Italains
to ask each other where they come from when meeting. It is the first
thing they ask and there is a lot of prejuduce.
